Careers in Accounting and Information Systems

AIS graduates can work as accountants, consultants, and auditors. They can specialize and become experts in computer auditing and controls, accounting information systems, e-commerce, security, and information systems consulting. AIS careers could be characterized by rapid increases in salary and responsibility.

AIS graduates will find career positions in public accounting firms, consulting firms, financial institutions, high tech and start-up companies, and manufacturing, agribusiness, communication, government, and health care organizations.

Graduates can boost their opportunities by attaining professional certification as a CPA (certified public accountant), CMA (certified management accounting), and CIA (certified internal auditor). With experience, AIS graduates can become chief financial officers, partners, and controllers in organizations of all sizes around the world.

Salaries

Similar to graduates in the related fields of accounting and management information systems, there is a wide range of salaries. Entry-level accountants report salaries ranging from $37,000-43,000, while MIS graduates start at $45,000-50,000. Master’s and doctoral degrees as well as professional certifications can greatly impact an AIS graduate’s future salary growth.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

Students majoring in AIS qualify for scholarships scholarships from the Department of Accounting and may also be eligible for scholarships from WSU’s College of Business.

Campus Organizations and Activities

There are two student clubs that will interest AIS students: Beta Alpha Psi (the Accounting honorary) and the MIS Club.

Both meet frequently and allow students to network with others who share their interests. The clubs host alumni and executive guests who share their real-world experiences and discuss technical issues, career opportunities, and special topics like ethics, liability, and job interviews. The groups expose members to internship and job opportunities and often coordinate field trips to firms as well as fun activities on campus.
