Creative Writing through the English Major

English is the study of the literatures and cultural functions of the English language. It involves applied skills in reading, critical thinking, and various kinds of writing (creative, professional, and analytical) in a range of contexts, including print and electronic.

Requirements and Core Courses

—Bachelor of Arts in English with an Option in Creative Writing

The creative writing option involves 39 credit hours. Students are also urged to take university general education requirement (GER) courses in American and world cultures, history, and society to round out the liberal arts education for their careers in creative writing, editing, publishing, and related fields.

NOTE: Students should consult the General Catalog for course planning and must meet course requirements as outlined in the catalog to graduate.

CREATIVE WRITING REQUIREMENTS
• Freshman Year:
One arts and humanities course
     or social sciences course
One four-credit biological sciences course
Engl 251—Introduction to Creative Writing: Exploring the Genres
GenEd 111—World Civilizations II
One three-credit social sciences course

• Sophomore Year:
Six total credits from any of the following:
     Arts and humanities
     Intercultural
     Social sciences
One four-credit physical sciences course
Two from:
     Engl 351—Creative Writing: Prose
     Engl 352—Creative Writing: Poetry
     Engl 353—Creative Writing: Nonfiction
Engl 302—Writing About Literature
One three-credit intercultural course
One three-credit, 300- to 400-level literature elective
Six elective credits (at least one 200-level literature course recommended)

• Junior Year:
Engl 446—Form and Theory in Creative Writing: Prose and Poetry
Six credits in 300- to 400-level literature electives
18 additional electives
Engl 451—Advanced Creative Writing: Prose
     or Engl 452—Advanced Creative Writing: Poetry
Complete writing portfolio

• Senior Year:
Engl 355—Multimedia Authoring: Exploring New Rhetorics

Careers in Creative Writing

An English degree provides excellent preparation for careers that demand good professional or creative writing skills, or for teaching secondary school or pursuing graduate degrees.

• Strong reading and writing skills, or a willingness to develop such skills
• Interest in language, literature, and culture
• Interest in how discourses can persuade, convey ideas, and define culture

Scholarships and Financial Aid

The Department of English offers undergraduate scholarships from four different endowed funds, most providing $1,000 tuition stipends annually. In addition, all English majors may apply for University-level scholarships and for more than $50,000 in scholarships awarded by the College of Liberal Arts.
