Teacher Preparation

The education curriculum provides the skills and knowledge to teach and guide school children in preschool through 12th grade. Students who successfully complete Washington State University’s preparation program and pass the WEST-E test will receive a Residency Teaching Certificate from the state of Washington.

Elementary Education Requirements and Core Courses

—Bachelor of Arts in Education

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM
To be eligible for admission into the program, students must meet the following requirements:
• Have 80 hours of recent educational experience with children or youth
• Meet state standards for competency in basic skills
• Complete at least 30 semester hours of course work
• Complete English 201 (or an equivalent composition course and a public speaking course with a grade of C or better
• Complete T&L 301: Learning and Development
• For Elementary Education candidates: Complete HD 101: Human Development Across the Lifespan; Math 251: Math for Elementary Teachers; and two science GERs (General Education Requirement) courses with a C grade or better
• Have a personal interview
• Complete a timed writing sample
• Pass the WEST-B Test
• Earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 at Washington State University

Preparation for Teaching Specific Subjects in Middle School and High School

—Teacher certification endorsement, with bachelor of arts or bachelor of science

To teach a specific subject in middle school or high school, you must complete a bachelor’s degree in the subject you choose. In addition to the classes for your declared major, you must complete core professional education coursework within the College of Education to earn teacher certification in a particular subject.

Careers in Education

Graduates from the College of Education may teach in public or private schools worldwide. Further study opens up possibilities as a coach, counselor, principal, or other administrative positions in schools.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

The College of Education distributes funds from 13 endowed scholarships to approximately 100 teacher preparation students every semester. Some of the scholarships with multiple recipients include the College of Education Alumni Association Scholarship, the Louise H. Meyer Scholarship, the Don and Julia Lee Scholarship, and the Claude Simpson and Peggy Simpson Yates Scholarship.
