German

The study of German not only provides a comprehensive and practical understanding of using the German language, but also develops intellectual curiosity, critical thinking skills, and appreciation of the humanistic context of international cultures.

Requirements and Core Courses

Some of the courses you can take:

— Four semesters of German language instruction
— Elementary and intermediate conversation courses
— German Film (in translation)
— Reading, translation, grammar, and writing in German (intermediate and advanced levels)
— Germanic culture
— German literature
— German for the professions
— Special Topics: Study Abroad

Careers

Knowledge of the German language and culture is useful in government organizations or international businesses and service groups that interact with German-speaking members of the global community.

Whatever career your chosen major leads to, a minor in German can enhance it and open additional opportunities for you.

Suggested Strengths, Interests, and Preparation

• Interest in Germanic culture and a desire to learn about other people
• German language study in high school is helpful (but not required)

Scholarships and Financial Aid

Washington State University offers a wide range of scholarships and need-based financial aid. WSU students may receive state, federal, and university-level financial aid.

In addition to University-wide financial assistance, the Department of Foreign Languages and Cultures offers various scholarship opportunities to students enrolled in a foreign language class. Strengths of the Program

  • WSU’s Language Learning Resource Center in Thompson Hall provides foreign language students access to 13 Windows 2000 and six Macintosh computers, plus stations for video and audio tape use.
  • WSU’s program includes the study of literature, film, and traditions of foreign cultures to deepen students’ intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and comprehension skills.
  • The department offers specialized language courses for students in business, the social sciences, engineering, and the sciences.
