International Business

International business studies the markets, people, and places involved in trade, commerce, and exchanges throughout the world. Students in this field are challenged to think globally and to develop an awareness of the cultural, political, and economic aspects of business.
Offered at WSU: Bachelor of arts in business administration with a major in international business, minor, master of business administration specialization, doctorate concentration

Requirements and Core Courses

—Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with a Major in International Business
In the WSU international business program, students can choose from a wide variety of electives and even pursue courses outside the program to tailor their studies. Students can acquire a general background in international business or focus studies on a particular region of the world, or they can double-major to gain an international slant on another business area. They will gain global skills needed for doing business worldwide.

REQUIREMENTS FOR JOINING PROGRAM
After taking 60 credit hours, completing 10 specified required courses (Econ 101 and 102, Engl 101, Acct 230 and 231, B Law 210, MgtOp 215, Math 201 and 202, MIS 250), and earning a 2.5 GPA, students can certify into a specific major in business, such as international business.
• NOTE: Certification is required for enrollment in all 300- and 400-level business courses.

Students should consult the General Catalog for course planning and must meet course requirements as outlined in the General Catalog in order to graduate. In addition to University general education requirements, international business students must take the following courses:

REQUIRED FOREIGN STUDY Curriculum **
Transfer of 9 semester hours from an approved foreign study program.

REQUIRED FOREIGN LANGUAGES ***
One year of foreign language beyond the high school level. The second semester may be taken during foreign study.

*May not be used under both I Bus and business core.
** Required except for students studying at WSU who reside outside the United States and who attended at least one year of secondary school in a foreign country. Please check with the I Bus director before registering for foreign study.
*** Non-native English speakers and bilingual Americans check with the department on this requirement.

The International Business Institute

WSU’s International Business Institute, established in 1997, coordinates a host of global business activities throughout the College of Business at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Institute develops student and faculty exchange programs with universities in other nations, including France, Thailand, and China. WSU students serve as host mentors to international businesspersons and educators who are brought in by the Institute to learn about American business practices. The Institute also created the first American MBA program in Vietnam by launching a cooperative offering with National Economics University in Hanoi.

Careers in International Business

WSU graduates in international business will be prepared for success in overseas assignments, staff positions that advise top management on international operations, positions with global responsibilities, consultant work with companies, and a world of additional opportunities.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

International business majors are eligible for University-wide scholarships and financial aid, in addition to many scholarships available through the College of Business.

Campus Organizations and Activities

The International Business Club meets weekly under the guidance of the department’s faculty. The club organizes field trips, participates in WSU’s International Week, conducts workshops to build resumes, and hosts speakers to learn more about education abroad, foreign languages, and career services.
