Human Nutrition

The nutritional science curriculum at WSU is now part of the degree in exercise metabolism and physiology, which is co-located between Pullman and Spokane. Pullman offers general education courses and the prerequisites needed to prepare for junior- and senior-level courses in the major, while Spokane offers the upper-division courses you'll take during the last two years of the program.

Offered at WSU: Bachelor of science in exercise metabolism and physiology
Available at: Spokane (upper-division courses); Pullman (general education requirements and prerequisites only)

Requirements and Core Courses

If you are interested in studying nutrition at WSU, consider the major in exercise metabolism and physiology, which includes a nutrition/dietetics component and prepares you to become an ACSM-certified exercise specialist and, if you wish, to enter the coordinated program in dietetics and earn certification as a registered dietician.

Another possibility is to start with the science general studies curriculum, which provides basic preparation for several science-related majors.

Note: Students should consult the WSU General Catalog for course planning, and must meet course requirements outlined in the catalog in order to graduate.

Careers in Human Nutrition

A degree from WSU in exercise physiology and metabolism will prepare you to enter a wide variety of challenging professions applying the art and science of exercise, food, and nutrition to human health, including dietetics, public health, food and nutrition-related businesses, nutrition research, exercise science, and more.

Typical job settings include health care, business and industry, public health and wellness, education, research, fitness centers, food service, and private practice. Currently there are more job openings in most health-related fields than graduates.

Suggested Strengths, Interests, and Preparation

• Enjoy working with people
• Interest in food, nutrition, and how the body works
• Strong background in chemistry, biological science, and communication skills

Scholarships and Financial Aid

Financial aid is available in the form of loans, scholarships, and employment. Scholarships are offered through WSU and through and state and national dietetic organizations.

Part-time employment is available in many places on the WSU campus. Students interested in food- and nutrition-related work may find work at the WSU Creamery, as well as in on-campus and local food service facilities. Summer and semester work experience in industry can be academically and financially rewarding.

You may also be eligible for state or federal financial aid. To find out more about WSU scholarships and other financial aid you may be eligible for, see the Scholarships and Finances section of the WSU Web site.
