Frequently asked questions
WSU uses the cumulative unweighted GPA, based on a 4.0 scale.
Yes; students need to apply by the January 31 application date to take advantage of the Assured Admission program. A complete application includes the application form, an official high school transcript, and test scores for the SAT or ACT (sent directly from the testing agency). All materials should be postmarked by January 31.
Yes, absolutely! There will be many students applying to the University who do not have a 3.5 but who have a solid academic record and are well prepared to succeed at WSU. We encourage you to apply by the priority date for admission so that we can give your application full consideration.
Yes. The Washington Higher Education Coordinating Board requires standardized test scores for freshman admission to all of the state’s public universities, so you still need to take an SAT or ACT before we can admit you to the University.
For admission purposes only, not if you meet the Top 10% or GPA requirements. However, as always, we do encourage you to do your best as it may affect scholarship consideration. If you decide to retake the SAT or ACT to improve your scholarship consideration, we will use the best critical reading and best math scores, even if they were taken on different test dates.
Nearly all of our applicants already submit a personal statement. We strongly recommend that ALL applicants do so, as the personal statement can also be used for the scholarship application. Because those students who are in the Top 10% or who have a 3.5 gpa are also likely to apply for scholarships, we encourage all students to complete the personal statement at the time they are applying for admission.
Yes. We make offers of admission with the expectation that students will complete their CADR requirements before enrolling at WSU.
The CADRs are:
English—four credits*, including at least three credits of composition and literature;
Mathematics—three credits, including algebra I, geometry, and algebra II; a fourth credit is recommended;
Science—two credits of laboratory science, including one credit of algebra-based science (typically chemistry or physics, though school districts may designate other courses);
World language—two credits of a single world language, Native American language, or American Sign Language;
Social Science—three credits;
Arts—one credit in fine, visual, or performing arts or an additional credit of the courses listed above
* one credit = one year
Yes. Admission is contingent not only on completing all of the academic core courses (CADRs), but also on maintaining a solid academic performance through to graduation.
Additionally, we expect students to take a meaningful academic course load their senior year. Final transcripts with senior year courses must be provided to the Admissions Office and will be verified.
Students are expected to maintain their academic grades as well as to continue to take academically meaningful courses. Students who anticipate difficulty in doing so are advised to contact the Office of Admissions immediately. Individual circumstances will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Home-schooled students who have done all or most of their high school work via home schooling are reviewed on an individual basis for admission. Decisions are based on a review of the student’s academic resume/transcript, and the extent to which it provides adequate documentation of completion of the CADRs, along with standardized test scores, and any other information the student provides for consideration. The same process applies for students who have completed a combination of home school, traditional high school work, and/or Running Start.
Yes, this program is for students applying to attend all WSU campuses that admit freshmen: Pullman, Tri-Cities, and Vancouver.

* The Assured Admission program is available to all Washington state high school students. To maintain early admission status, students must complete the CADR and admission requirements as outlined by the Washington Higher Education Coordinating Board, keep their high school grades and standing at the same level during their senior year, and graduate.
Applications to attend WSU must be submitted by published deadlines.
January 31 is the priority application date for fall semester 2010.
