How I became a Coug.

Keeping it in the family

By Shane

Sophomore

Wherever a person ends up attending college a discussion is likely to arise at some point in time amongst their acquaintances, "How did you end up here?" It may come from a roommate, friend, parent, family member, or the neighbor next door. Everyone's story is a little different, and a good memory to share. Sometimes it was determined by the person's parent(s), became their last available option, or just seemed like an interesting place, no two stories are the same. My story is quite unique and somewhat entertaining.

When I was still a youngster, my brother was a student here. Coming home one weekend, he found me wearing something absolutely unacceptable. Being a young, impressionable child, I knew little better at the time. For a birthday gift, a family member had given me a purple and gold University of Washington t-shirt. I was wearing the shirt when my brother came home to visit, and quickly found out how disappointed he was. I remember being stripped of my shirt, having it ripped clean off my back. As he held it in his hand he sternly warned me that he never wanted to see me in purple and gold again in his life. Handing me a new, crimson-and-grey t-shirt with the well-known WSU crest across the front, and I was forever reborn a Cougar.

As a senior in high school, WSU was the only school I applied to, and the only school I considered acceptable. Since the day I became a Coug, I haven't regretted a day of it (well, maybe an occasional Rose Bowl or Apple Cup).
