Future Students

Scholarships & Finances

WSU puts world-class education within your reach.

We offer many ways to fund a WSU education for Washington state residents, out-of-state students, and transfer students alike.

Scholarships for state residents

For Washington residents, four award programs make a Washington State University education accessible. If you apply for admission and submit your academic scholarship application by January 31, you are automatically considered for all four of these awards:

University Achievement Awards

The University honors your strong academic record with an award that's renewable for a second year. Awards generally range from $2,000 to $4,000 and are granted to students who:

  • Meet eligibility requirements
  • Apply for scholarships and freshman admission to the Pullman campus by the January 31 priority application date
  • Are residents of the state of Washington

Check the award calculator to see if you qualify for a University Achievement Award.

Note: This award cannot be combined with the Regents Scholar Award or the National Merit Semifinalist Scholarship.

Future Cougars of Color Scholars Program

Outstanding entering students can receive awards of $1,000, $3,000, or $5,000, renewable up to four years.

These scholarships are awarded as part of the Future Cougars of Color visitation event on the Pullman campus. The event is open to students who have been offered admission and have submitted the WSU scholarship application by January 31.

To be eligible to attend the Future Cougars of Color Scholars Program, you need to:

  • Apply for admission and scholarships before the January 31 priority date
  • Be a Washington state resident
  • Be offered admission to Washington State University

Applicants must participate in the entire Future Cougars of Color event on the Pullman campus to receive one of these scholarships. Registration for Future Cougars of Color is free, and opens in mid- January. Space is limited, and registration is first-come, first-served.

700+ awards from colleges, departments, and academic programs

Awards are based on varying combinations of academic performance, extracurricular involvement, financial need, and academic interest area. Many are available to transfer students. Award amounts vary, and many are worth thousands of dollars.

To be automatically considered for these awards:

  • Submit the academic scholarship application by January 31.

Cougar Commitment

This need-based program pays full tuition and required fees, and is renewable for up to four years. You can qualify for this award if you:

  • Are from a low-income or lower middle-income family in Washington and meet State Need Grant or Pell Grant requirements.
  • Apply to WSU for admission and scholarships by January 31 and enroll as a full-time freshman or transfer student.
  • Complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) beginning January 1 and no later than February 15.

In general, if you’re from a family of four with an income of $46,500 or less, you could attend Washington State University tuition-free.

Don’t delay. Apply for admission and scholarships before January 31.
